Day 6 • Move in Power

Scripture

Acts 1:14 (NIV)

They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.

Reflection

In contemplating what we’re devoted to, our minds may first turn to work, relationships, or hobbies, like golf or pickleball. Many things can claim our devotion. But do we have a clear understanding of what devotion is?

As defined by Merriam-Webster, devotion is “the act of dedicating something to a cause, enterprise, or activity.” It is not merely giving temporary attention to something; it is committing one’s life to a person or cause. True devotion demands time, discipline, and commitment. When it comes to prayer, devotion requires something even more—it requires faith. As James 5:16 declares, “The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.” The early church embodied this devotion. Each disciple was wholly devoted to prayer, to God, and to one another. What distinguished the early church was their complete devotion to prayer and their unwavering belief that their prayers could change anything. This devotion is vividly demonstrated in Acts 2 at Pentecost.

To be truly devoted to prayer and the communal act of praying with others is a noble aspiration. But how can we take next steps toward deepening our prayer life and aligning ourselves more closely with God’s will? And cultivate a powerful prayer life akin to that of the early church? Here are four steps that could guide us toward a deeper intimacy with God:

  1. Establish a Daily Prayer Time: Whenever possible, commit to praying at the same time each day and in the same place.
  2. Align with Others: Seek out individuals who share this desire for intimacy with God and commit to praying together daily.
  3. Pray Scripture: Engage in the practice of praying God’s Word back to him.
  4. Keep a Prayer Journal: Use this tool to track and observe the powerful ways in which God intersects with prayers.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, draw me closer to your heart. Deepen my relationship with you through prayer, and help me to become fully devoted to you and your kingdom. Align my heart with yours, so that my prayers may reflect your will and purposes. Guide me in every moment, that my life may be a testimony of your grace and love.

In Jesus's name I pray,
Amen.

Church Family Prayer

Heavenly Father, we want you to move. We are hungry and desperate for more of you. Pour your Spirit out over us, our families, our church, and our community.

In Jesus's name I pray,
Amen.
